ARLINGTON (1080 KRLD) - Terrifying moments in Arlington last night, when a dog attack ended in gunfire.

Police say a 73-year-old woman was out for an evening stroll on Northaven Court when suddenly, she became the target of two aggressive Pit Bulls.

"A dog got loose from a yard and began attacking her," said Tim Ciesco, Media Relations Coordinator with the Arlington Police Department. "A second dog also got loose from that yard and was kind of circling around the woman and the other dog."

Police say a neighbor heard the woman screaming and ran outside to help.

She told police she saw one of the pit bulls on top of the woman, so she drew her gun and fired. In the chaos, the woman managed to strike the dog, stopping the attack. Both dogs ran from the gunfire but were later found and turned over to animal control.

After the attack, police say the elderly victim was rushed to the hospital with serious injuries. She's expected to recover.

The owners of the Pit Bulls are cooperating with the investigation. Police say the dog that was shot is still alive.
