For renters and unemployed workers tomorrow is an ominous day with two deadlines landing at once.

Tomorrow, July 25th, is the expiration date for a moratorium on evictions, and it also marks the last day of the week before federal unemployment supplements expire.

For workers getting unemployment benefits, unless Congress does something at the eleventh hour, they will lose the $600 weekly federal unemployment supplement enacted as part of the federal CARES act voted into life in March as the worst of the Coronavirus lockdowns began to put people out of work.

The same legislation also established a temporary moratorium on evictions for all rental units that were backed by some form of federally financing like Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

That moratorium is also scheduled to end tomorrow.

And just down the road at the end of August, is the sunset for the temporary ban on foreclosures.

By August 1st, at least two million homeowners, nationwide, are in danger of missing their third or even fourth consecutive mortgage payment.
