DALLAS (1080 KRLD) - A Walmart store is closing its doors after more than 30 years in Dallas's Redbird neighborhood, turning the area into a food desert.
The store has been open on Wheatland Road in southern Dallas for 33 years, but Walmart claims the store is underperforming, so today they’re closing the doors.
Customers have been preparing for the closure for a while now. Over the past few weeks, they’ve slowly seen fresh produce and other groceries fade from the shelves.
The closure of this Walmart makes the Redbird area into a food desert. That happens when there's no quality grocery within a mile of an area. Now people have to drive about three miles out of their way to shop for groceries at stores like Tom Thumb.
There have been some incidents of shoplifting at this Walmart, but the company claims those didn't factor into their decision to close the store.
Dallas city council members say Walmart still owes the community an explanation.
