The Persians

Regarded as the oldest surviving play in theater history, "The Persians" stands out among ancient Greek tragedies for depicting recent history instead of events from the mythological past. The play centers on the Battle of Salamis, where the Greeks triumphed over a vastly larger Persian force in 480 B.C. This victory occurred just eight years before the play's debut in 472 B.C., and Aeschylus himself participated in the battle. "The Persians" focuses on the downfall of the Persian Empire, lamented by Queen Atossa, who mourns the reckless actions of her son Xerxes that led to their defeat. The play also features the ghost of Xerxes' father, Darius, who decries the destruction of his once-mighty empire. "The Persians" is the only surviving part of a trilogy that won first prize at the City Dionysia of Athens in 472 BCE. The play's impact has resonated from ancient times to the present, as evidenced by Ellen McLaughlin's compelling adaptation.
