Amazon Prime Video has ordered an eight-episode RoboCop television series, reviving the influential 1987 cult classic with original creators involved.

The new show will feature a giant tech conglomerate placing a powerful robot cop — implanted with the consciousness of a fallen officer — on the force in a reimagined Detroit. Michael Miner and Ed Neumeier, who co-wrote the original film, are executive producers along with others including director James Wan. Peter Ocko serves as showrunner. Production details and a release timeline have not yet been announced.

The original RoboCop, directed by Paul Verhoeven and starring Peter Weller as the cyborg law enforcer Alex Murphy, became a sci-fi satire landmark exploring themes of corporate power, police militarization and identity. Set in a crime-ridden future Detroit controlled by Omni Consumer Products, the film blended action with dark humor and social commentary.

North Texas audiences have a special connection to the movie. Much of the 1987 production filmed in Dallas, standing in for the Motor City. Iconic scenes, including those at the fictional OCP headquarters and various street sequences, were shot locally, giving the film a distinct Dallas flavor in its dystopian look. The city’s architecture and urban landscape helped bring the story to life on a budget.

The reboot arrives amid renewed interest in classic franchises updated for modern streaming audiences. Amazon’s involvement signals a high-profile push, with the series expected to explore similar corporate and ethical questions updated for today’s tech landscape.

For Dallas viewers, the news revives memories of the original’s local production impact. The film not only put the city on the map for sci-fi fans but also showcased its versatility as a filming location.
