A student in Frisco ISD was hit and killed while he rode his bicycle to school Wednesday morning. Wednesday was the first day of class in Frisco ISD.
The district says Landon Bourque, 15, was a sophomore at Heritage High School.
Frisco ISD is deeply saddened by the loss of Heritage High School Sophomore Landon Bourque who died this morning after being struck by a car while on his bike," a district representative said Thursday in a written statement. "Landon was a beloved member of the campus community. His loss will be felt by the Coyote family and our thoughts go out to the Bourque family and loved ones."
Bourque went to a Frisco ISD school, but Independence Parkway is in the City of McKinney. McKinney Police say the driver who hit Bourke stopped, tried to help and called 911.
Parents who live nearby say that part of Collin County is growing quickly, and Independence Parkway has more traffic, and they say many people ignore speed limits in school zones.
"This is not the first time. There have been three or four incidents here, but I'm not sure if they were fatalities or not," one dad said. "They put these lights in the crosswalk thinking that's going help. They have [crossing guards], but sometimes they don't get here on time."
Other people who live nearby say drivers often ignore crossing guards. They say they worry about walking their kids across Independence which has two lanes in each direction and a grass median.
"There are a lot of middle schools toward 121," one mom said. "But there's a lot of traffic, a lot of people passing through."
McKinney Police say they are still investigating the crash.
"Our hearts go out to everyone involved in this tragedy," the department wrote in an email.
Bourque also played football for Frisco Heritage.
"We are deeply saddened by the loss of Landon. He was an extremely hard-working young man and incredible teammate who didn't care about the spotlight and always strived to help the Coyotes have success," Heritage football coach Kenneth Gilchrist said in a written statement. "His dedication and unselfishness made everyone better around him and we will remember him as the young man who always had a smile on his face."
