The heroic police dog that nabbed a suspected killer in Houston on Wednesday is going to be ok.

Rocky jumped into a dumpster to confront the violent fugitive who shot and killed Brazoria County deputy Jesus Vargas. The suspect who was hiding under a bunch of garbage shot the year-and-a-half-old Belgian Malinois twice before police shot and killed him. Rocky, who works for the US Marshal's office, was flown to an animal clinic.

Veterinarian Dr. Jeff Chalkley says Rocky underwent surgery, one bullet narrowly missed his spine. He says Rocky is eating, drinking, walking and his handler has not left his side.

Meanwhile, the Houston community is mourning the death of Brazoria County Sheriff's Deputy Jesus Vargas. Vargas was shot and killed while trying to serve a warrant by approaching violent fugitive Robert Davis in a parking lot. Davis shot him in the head and ran away before K-9 Rocky found him not too far from the scene of the shooting inside a dumpster.

"That guy shot our K-9, our deputies returned fire. The suspect succumbed to his injuries inside the dumpster," Houston Police Chief Noe Diaz explained.

Vargas had been with his department for 17 years and leaves behind a wife and three children.

Rocky is expected to make a full recovery and return to the force soon.
