Brett Dawson was wounded a decade ago while serving in the Marine Corps in Afghanistan. He now works as an analyst for the U.S. Department of Defense. His fiancée is a physician. And they’re now the proud owners of a three-bedroom, two-and-a-half-bath, home worth $195,000 on the market.
Operation Homefront, a Texas-based charity, worked with J.P. Morgan Chase, which donated a home in foreclosure so the couple will only be responsible for taxes and utilities. That saves the couple about $1,600 a month.
"It was kind of like overwhelming," he said. "It hasn't sunk in yet. I mean this is completely amazing. It's just overwhelming."
He still deals with the physical and emotional aftermath of his service, for which we earned a Purple Heart.
Dawson also realizes there are other veterans in need. His advice: Ask for help, like he did.
And for the rest of us: "Just be there for them," he said. "Just stand by and support them as much as you can. Unfortunately, there's a lot of homeless vets."
But with this help, he and his intended can work on their new home and their June wedding.
