PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Philadelphia lost its intercity bus terminal more than two years ago and still hasn’t settled on a permanent location for a new one.
Since Greyhound ditched its depot near Chinatown and construction wiped out stops near 30th Street, the city has tried Sixth and Market streets, and Second and Spring Garden streets.
But planning officials at a City Council hearing last week agreed that something better is needed. They said they’re studying six potential locations, though they declined to name them so as not to work up neighbors unnecessarily.
One witness, Benjamin She, used to work for the city and said the best possible long-term location is near 30th Street.
“Colocation of bus and rail is the norm in Boston, DC, LA, Pittsburgh and countless peer cities. The built-in ridership of college students and long-distance commuters is unbeatable.”
She acknowledged there are also challenges there, but advised working to resolve them before crowds attempt to visit for the World Cup and other 2026 festivities, including the nation’s 250th birthday.
“Or else carriers will be forced to park in any open curb they can find, further confusing riders and angering neighbors.”
