PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Saturday brings the annual Rock n’ Ride bike race, ride and music festival in Ardmore, where proceeds from the day benefit Narberth Ambulance.
That organization, staffed by volunteers and career emergency workers, provides 911 services to an area of 150,000 people in Narberth, Lower Merion, Haverford, Conshohocken, and West Conshohocken.
“We need to stay on top of fundraising to keep our ambulances, the latest equipment and our staff and volunteers taken care of,” said Narberth Ambulance Chief of Operations Chris Flanagan.
He said Rock n’ Ride is their biggest fundraiser.
“Medical equipment is critically expensive, but yet [is] quickly needed and to keep the best equipment possible to save lives, we are constantly reinvesting in our product and our training,” Flanagan added.
But he said the event is more than the bike race, with music and activities for all ages. He calls it more than just a fundraiser.
“There's benefits [like] getting to know your neighbors,” said Flanagan. “Come walk down, have a good time, listen to some incredible music and have fellowship with your neighbors, and I think that's an important part of this event as well.”
The bike race takes a 1-mile loop around Suburban Square. The race allows people of all levels to try the course, even kids as young as 4 years old. The racing wraps up with men's professionals at 5 p.m., and music goes until 9 p.m.
The event's family fun zone is free and open to the public from noon until 7 p.m. It includes carnival games, mini-golf and an obstacle course.
