PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Temple University and AtlantiCare are planning to open a four-year medical school in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

It will be connected to the AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center city campus.

“AtlantiCare is proud to partner with Temple University on what we believe is one of the most significant investments in the future of Atlantic City and South Jersey in decades,” Michael Charlton, President and CEO of AtlantiCare, said in a statement. “Building a four-year School of Medicine in this region will help strengthen the physician pipeline, create new opportunity for students and support healthier communities for generations to come.”

The new school will serve as one of four main locations for Temple’s Lewis Katz School of Medicine. Medical students will receive the same pre-clinical lectures regardless of where they are enrolled.

Temple said the new campus will be focused on addressing a physician shortage, forecast to reach 86,000 nationwide by 2036.

“We have an aging population where doctors will be retiring, but we also have an increasing aging population where they will certainly need doctors. And we are just trying to stay out ahead of it and do our part,” said Amy Goldberg, dean of Temple’s Katz School.

The first class of about 40 students is expected to start in August 2029. The campus will also be able to accommodate third- and fourth-year rotating students.
