The Padres dropped the series opener against the Phillies on Tuesday evening 3-2. Facing Aaron Nola for the second time in a week, the Padres' offense struggled to the tune of just four hits and eight strikeouts in five innings, but took a 2-0 lead in the 3rd inning thanks to a 2-run home run from Gavin Sheets. Bryce Harper tied the game with a 2-run homer of his own in the 4th inning, as Nola and Randy Vasquez matched up evenly through five innings. Jeremiah Estrada relieved Vasquez in the 6th inning, and immediately got into a jam, issuing a leadoff walk to Bryce Harper, followed by a single to Brandon Marsh. With runners on the corners and no outs, Alec Bohm grounded into a double play, allowing Harper to score from third base, putting the Phillies on top 3-2. The Padres had a chance to tie the game in the 8th inning however. After a leadoff single by Fernando Tatis Jr., followed by back to back fly outs, Miguel Andujar hit a soft chopper to third base and reached first safely without a throw. Bohm faked the throw to first base, and immediately looked to second base, and was able to catch Tatis Jr. in between bases after he rounded second base too far. Tatis was tagged out at third base, running the Padres out of a situation with the go-ahead run on base for Jackson Merrill. Jhoan Duran struck out the side in a perfect 9th inning to secure the 3-2 win for the Padres, who are now 1-7 in their last 8 games. Walker Buehler will try and get the Padres back in the win column on Wednesday.
