Jake Gyllenhaal is coming for one of Patrick Swayze's '80s gigs!
In a case of “news you didn’t know you’d be so excited about,” it has been announced that Gyllenhaal is going to take on Swayze’s iconic role in a remake of “Road House.”
The idea first surfaced in November of 2021, but now it's definitely in motion.
The 1989 flick was only a minor hit when first released – and a poorly reviewed one at that. But it has since attained status as a quintessentially cheeky, 1980s tough guy, bar-centered cult classic. Think a more action-packed “Cocktail.”
As Entertainment Weekly reported, Amazon Prime confirmed news of the project on Tuesday, with "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" and "Edge of Tomorrow" director Doug Liman signed on to helm the production.

It sounds like this new version will up the action even more. Gyllenhaal will play the dive bar bouncer with the mysterious past as a former UFC fighter, and the setting will move from Missouri to the Florida Keys.
"I'm thrilled to put my own spin on the beloved ‘Road House’ legacy,” said Liman in a press release. “And I can't wait to show audiences what Jake and I are going to do with this iconic role."

The film will also star Billy Magnussen, Daniela Melchior, Gbemisola Ikumelo, and Lukas Gage.
A reboot of a mid-brow audience pleaser wouldn’t seem to fall into Gyllenhaal’s wheelhouse, or road house, as it were. Not only is this a fun surprise for the oft-serious minded actor, but it adds another intriguing layer to Gyllenhaal’s always unpredictable project choices. The 41-year-old has been flexing his action muscles of late having recently starred in "Spider-Man: Far From Home," "The Guilty," and "Ambulance."
