Georgia voters are turning out early in record numbers ahead of the state’s primary election, while drivers across the state are seeing another sharp increase in gas prices heading into a busy weekend full of events and celebrations.
More than 130,000 Georgians have already cast ballots during the early voting period, setting a record pace for the primary election. Officials say nearly 75% of voters plan to vote early this election cycle. Early voting continues through May 15, with Election Day scheduled for May 19.
The race for Georgia governor is also making history financially, becoming the most expensive Republican gubernatorial primary in state history. More than $100 million has already been spent on the race for governor and lieutenant governor positions.
Meanwhile, Georgia drivers are continuing to feel pain at the pump. Gas prices statewide jumped 22 cents over the past week, including a five-cent increase in just one day. The average price for a gallon of regular gas in Georgia now sits at $3.80, still below the national average of $4.30 per gallon.
Fulton County currently has the highest gas prices in the state.
Despite rising costs, metro Atlanta residents still have plenty of reasons to get out this weekend. Communities across North Georgia are hosting concerts, festivals, and seasonal celebrations.
The City of Kennesaw’s Free Concert Series returns Saturday night featuring Boy Band Review, while additional events include Kentucky Derby parties, early Cinco de Mayo celebrations, the Georgia State Fair, Taste of Spring Festival in Conyers, Taste of Mableton, and the Acworth Cobb Dragon Boat Festival.
