Politics, World Cup Impact and Restaurant Rankings Make Headlines in Georgia

3 Things To Know

Georgia voters, soccer fans and fast-food lovers all have something new to talk about this week as developments in politics, the FIFA World Cup and restaurant rankings continue to make headlines across the state.

Attention is already turning toward Georgia’s upcoming gubernatorial election after the Republican primary produced a nominee who will face former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms in November. Political observers expect campaign activity to increase significantly in the coming months, bringing more television advertisements, mailers and voter outreach efforts statewide. Election officials reported that voter turnout in the primary was relatively low, with only a small percentage of active voters participating.

Meanwhile, communities around metro Atlanta are continuing to experience the effects of the FIFA World Cup. In Cobb County, the city of Smyrna announced that increased traffic and event-related activity could contribute to mail delivery delays. As a result, officials said late fees on utility bills will be waived during June to accommodate any potential disruptions. The World Cup has brought increased visitor traffic and international attention to the Atlanta area as matches and related events continue.

In consumer news, a major shift occurred in a national customer satisfaction survey focused on quick-service restaurants. For the first time in more than a decade, Atlanta-based Chick-fil-A was not ranked as the top quick-service restaurant in the country. Instead, Jersey Mike’s earned the highest overall customer satisfaction score in the latest survey. While Chick-fil-A lost the overall crown, it remains the highest-rated brand in the quick-service chicken category. Among full-service restaurants, LongHorn Steakhouse and Texas Roadhouse tied for the top position.
