The world has seen a surge in billionaires in the last year, according to the new Forbes list.
On Tuesday, the publication released its 35th annual list of world billionaires, and noted a strong increase in the total number over the last year.
Forbes reports that this year’s total number of billionaires is up to 2,755, up about 30% from the 2020 list.
“The number of billionaires on Forbes’ 35th annual list of the world’s wealthiest exploded to an unprecedented 2,755—660 more than a year ago,” the outlet explained. “Altogether they are worth $13.1 trillion, up from $8 trillion on the 2020 list.”
Forbes cited several factors that may have caused this uptick, including “rapid-fire public offerings, surging cryptocurrencies and skyrocketing stock prices.”

The outlet stated the 2021 list included 493 newcomers including Tyler Perry and Bumble dating app cofounder Whitney Wolfe Herd.
The list saw some returning names as well, with people who fell off in the past coming back.
The list’s top ten included familiar names from the tech and business world. Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos topped the list no. 1 with a whopping net worth of $177 billion. Elon Musk, head at Tesla and SpaceX, came in second at a net worth of $10 billion.
The list also include Luxury Goods chief executive Bernard Arnault at no. 3 ($150 billion), Microsoft’s Bill Gates at no. 4 ($124 billion), Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg at no. 5 ($97 billion) and stock-trading icon Warren Buffett at no. 6 ($96 billion).
