One of South Carolina's top football prospects is headed to Baton Rouge.
Byrnes High School running back Tre Segarra announced Tuesday that he has committed to LSU, giving the Tigers a major addition to their 2027 recruiting class. Segarra chose LSU over a lengthy list of national offers that included South Carolina, Tennessee, Alabama, Indiana and several other Power Four programs.
The 5-foot-10, 210-pound four-star prospect has emerged as one of the premier running backs in the country. Recruiting services rank Segarra among the nation's top running backs and one of the top overall prospects in South Carolina.
Segarra has been a standout performer for Byrnes since his freshman season and is coming off a stellar junior campaign. In 2025, he rushed for 1,460 yards and 17 touchdowns while averaging 8.4 yards per carry. He also added 19 receptions for 198 yards and four touchdowns, showcasing his versatility as both a runner and pass catcher.
Known for his combination of power, vision and explosiveness, Segarra has developed a reputation as one of the most complete backs in the Southeast. His athletic background includes soccer, a sport he still competes in at Byrnes, and many evaluators point to that experience as a factor in his balance, footwork and ability to change direction in the open field.
Segarra becomes one of the cornerstone pieces of LSU's 2027 recruiting class and gives first-year head coach Lane Kiffin another significant recruiting victory. LSU running backs coach Kevin Smith played a key role in Segarra's recruitment, with the Tigers making the South Carolina standout a priority target throughout the process.
For Byrnes, Segarra's commitment continues the program's tradition of producing Division I talent. He enters his senior season as one of the state's most dynamic offensive players and will look to lead the Rebels on another postseason run before beginning his college career in Baton Rouge.
