Cole Bryson Week 12 Picks

Cole Bryson Week 12 Picks

The regular season is in the rearview mirror, and now the fun really begins!

After 11 weeks of high school football across the Palmetto State, we've finally reached the postseason. It's Week 12, and from this point forward, the stakes couldn't be higher.

Win and advance. Lose and start basketball season.

It's that simple.

For some teams, Friday night will be the beginning of what they hope is a deep playoff run. For others, it'll be the final time they strap on the pads this season.

And if there's one thing we've learned over the years, it's that you can throw just about everything out the window when the playoffs roll around. Records, rankings and what happened back in September don't mean a whole lot when your season is on the line.

We've got some intriguing first-round matchups across the Upstate, including a few games where I believe the lower-seeded team has a legitimate chance to pull off an upset.

So, without further ado, let's get into my Week 12 picks!

Class AAAAA Division II

No. 9 Rock Hill at No. 8 Boiling Springs

Boiling Springs gets the benefit of playing at home, but I'm going with the Bearcats in this one. Rock Hill finds a way to get it done on the road and advance to the second round.

Pick: Rock Hill

No. 12 Spartanburg at No. 5 River Bluff

It's been a challenging season for Spartanburg, and unfortunately for the Vikings, the road doesn't get any easier in the postseason. River Bluff gets this one at home, and I like the Gators to take care of business.

Pick: River Bluff

No. 10 Lexington at No. 7 Fort Mill

This is one of those first-round games that could be interesting deep into the fourth quarter. Lexington will certainly have something to say about it, but I'm giving the edge to Fort Mill on its home field.

Pick: Fort Mill

No. 11 Chapin at No. 6 Hillcrest

This is a matchup I'll be keeping a close eye on Friday night. Hillcrest has the opportunity to make some noise in the postseason, and I believe the Rams will take advantage of playing at home. Give me Hillcrest to advance.

Pick: Hillcrest

Class AAAA

No. 9 Fountain Inn at No. 8 Catawba Ridge

Fountain Inn has an opportunity to make a statement on the road, but Catawba Ridge won't be an easy place to pick up a postseason victory. I'm riding with the home team in what could be a competitive first-round matchup.

Pick: Catawba Ridge

No. 12 Greenwood at No. 5 Indian Land

Greenwood is a program with plenty of football tradition, but tradition alone won't win you a playoff game. Indian Land has earned the opportunity to host, and I like the Warriors to defend their home turf.

Pick: Indian Land

No. 10 Greenville at No. 7 Greer

Now this is a matchup that catches my attention!

Two familiar Upstate programs meeting with their seasons on the line. Greer gets the home-field advantage, but I'm going against the seeding here. Give me Greenville to go on the road and pull off the first-round upset.

Pick: Greenville

No. 11 Clover at No. 6 Lancaster

Clover will have its hands full on the road against Lancaster. I expect the Blue Eagles to compete, but Lancaster has the edge playing in front of its home crowd. I'm taking the Bruins to move on.

Pick: Lancaster

Class AAA

No. 9 Emerald at No. 8 Powdersville

This is another matchup that could go either way. There's not much separating these two teams in the bracket, but I like Powdersville to get the job done at home. The Patriots survive and advance.

Pick: Powdersville

No. 12 Southside at No. 5 Seneca

Southside faces a difficult first-round assignment with a trip to Seneca. The Bobcats have the higher seed and home-field advantage, and I expect them to make the most of both.

Pick: Seneca

No. 10 Walhalla at No. 7 Pickens

There's something special about playoff football when two programs from this part of the state get together. Walhalla will be looking to spoil the night, but I'm taking Pickens to protect its home field and keep its season alive.

Pick: Pickens

No. 11 Palmetto at No. 6 Blue Ridge

Palmetto will have to bring its best football to knock off Blue Ridge on the road. I wouldn't be surprised if this one stays close for a while, but I believe the Tigers will find a way to advance.

Pick: Blue Ridge

Class AA

No. 9 Mountain View Prep at No. 8 Chester

Here's another upset pick! Chester has the home-field advantage, but I'm rolling with Mountain View Prep. I like the Stars' chances of going on the road and making a statement in the opening round.

Pick: Mountain View Prep

No. 13 Newberry at No. 4 Keenan

Newberry has a tough draw to open the postseason. Keenan enters as the No. 4 seed and will be looking to avoid becoming one of the first-round casualties. I like the Raiders to handle business at home.

Pick: Keenan

No. 12 Andrew Jackson at No. 5 St. Joseph's

It's playoff time for the Knights, and St. Joseph's has an opportunity to make some noise. Andrew Jackson will certainly come in looking to spoil the party, but I like St. Joseph's to come away with the victory and advance.

Pick: St. Joseph's

Class A

No. 10 Liberty at No. 7 Clinton

Clinton is a program that knows a thing or two about postseason football. Liberty will have to play extremely well to leave with a victory, and I just don't see it happening. Give me the Red Devils.

Pick: Clinton

No. 14 Woodruff at No. 3 Crescent

Woodruff finds itself in a tough spot heading into the opening round. Crescent has earned the No. 3 seed, and I expect the Tigers to come out ready to play. I'm taking Crescent to advance.

Pick: Crescent

No. 11 Pendleton at No. 6 Chesnee

I'll be interested to see how this one unfolds. Pendleton is certainly capable of making things interesting, but I like Chesnee playing at home. Give me the Eagles to keep their postseason hopes alive.

Pick: Chesnee

Final Thoughts

Eighteen games. Eighteen picks. And you can bet there will be a few surprises before the night is over.

That's what makes high school playoff football so special.

For the seniors, every snap could be their last. For the coaches, every decision carries a little more weight. And for the communities that have supported these teams since August, there's nothing quite like watching your hometown team make a run in November.

I've got three lower-seeded teams winning on the road this week: Rock Hill, Greenville and Mountain View Prep. We'll see if those picks pay off.

One thing is certain: By the time the lights go out Friday night, the playoff field will be a whole lot smaller.

Good luck to all our Upstate teams competing in the opening round.

It's November football, folks. There's nothing better!
