When it comes to the NFL Draft, there's no question the Patriots are in the quarterback market and selecting No. 15 overall, more are in play for them than in recent years when they were selecting towards the end of the first round.
So, what does the 2021 QB class look like?
Jim Nagy, the executive director of the Senior Bowl, joined Mut at Night Wednesday and gave an early scouting report of the group, saying it's better than many expected it to be going into the year.
“It’s shaped up to be a better group than we would have thought," he said. "I think most teams had Mac Jones in the third, fourth-round type area based off his limited body of work last year. He started those couple of games late against Auburn and Michigan and looked good, but teams are reluctant to stick a first or second-round grade over the summer based off such a small sample size. Mac worked himself into being at minimum a top-50 pick. Right now where Mac is going, he could end up in the top half of the first round.
"Then you have a guy like [Zach] Wilson at BYU, who kind of came out of nowhere who is leaving early. He’s put himself in there. Trey Lance is kind of the wild card right now, from North Dakota State. Really good tape in that one year as a starter, but again small school, limited sample size with no All-Star game. So, he’s unproven, but there are talented guys. Then obviously with Trevor Lawrence up there at the top and a lot of people like Justin Fields as well. That group is really better than it looked like it was coming into the year.”
The Senior Bowl will be played Jan. 25 in Mobile, Alabama.
