Saints tight ends coach Dan Campbell was officially named as the Detroit Lions head coach Wednesday.

Campbell had reportedly been the Lions top candidate after interviewing with the franchise last Monday.

Campbell has spent the past five seasons serving as the Saints tight ends coach. He’d previously served as the Miami Dolphins interim head coach in 2015 and was a member of the Miami staff for the previous four seasons.

Prior to coaching Campbell played 11 seasons in the NFL with the New York Giants (1999-2002), Dallas Cowboys (2003-05), Detroit Lions (2006-08) and Saints (2009).

Campbell replaces Matt Patricia as Lions head coach. Patricia went 13-29-1 in three seasons as the Lions head coach and was first following the Detroit’s Week 12 loss to the Houston Texans.

Campbell isn’t the only member of the Saints organization making a move. The Atlanta Falcons announced Saints VP/ director of pro personnel Terry Fontenot would be their next GM Tuesday morning.

Saints defensive backs coach Aaron Glenn will reportedly be headed to Detroit as well to serve as defensive coordinator.
