North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper is asking the governing board of college sports to let a veteran wide receiver from Kent State play for his alma mater.
The NCAA denied Devontez Walker's request for a waver allowing him to play for the University of North Carolina this year after transferring from Kent State. Governor Cooper is now asking the NCAA's governing board to reconsider their denial, allowing immediate eligibility for Walker to play for the Tar Heels.
Coach Mack Brown says, Walker had enrolled at North Carolina a matter of days before the NCAA revised rules to limit waivers for two-time transfers to a case-by-case basis.
Governor Cooper is an alumnus of UNC, both as an undergraduate and the law school.
