The chances of Carson Wentz remaining with the Philadelphia Eagles just increased, according to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler.
"Doug Pederson firing significantly increases chances of Carson Wentz staying in Philadelphia, a source told ESPN," Fowler tweeted on Monday, minutes after the Eagles' released a statement announcing Pederson has been let go as head coach. "Became clear keeping both would be difficult. Eagles could always gauge market or adjust with new coach but relationship appears salvageable."
Wentz’s underwhelming 2020 season was a major storyline this season for the Eagles, who finished 4-11-1 and in last place in the NFC East, and the decision to play rookie QB Jalen Hurts in the final stretch of games reportedly hampered Wentz's relationship with Pederson.
Now, with Pederson out as head coach, the window for Wentz returning has apparently opened.
Wentz had 15 interceptions and the lowest passer rating of his career in 12 games before being sent to the bench.
Wentz is set to enter the first year of a four-year, $128 million extension in 2021. Wentz would leave a $33 million cap hit on the Eagles’ 2021 salary cap if he was traded, but would be completely off the books in 2022, leaving them $81 million in salary cap space.
