The Red Sox made a selection in the Major League portion of the Rule 5 draft on Thursday.
Selecting fourth overall, the team added right-handed pitcher Garrett Whitlock from the Yankees. He is coming off Tommy John Surgery, but before that was a top-20 prospect in the Yankees system.
Whitlock, 24, most recently was with Double-A Trenton and in 14 games in 2019 -- all starts -- was 3-3 with a 3.07 ERA. In 70 1/3 innings, he struck out 57, while walking 18.
He was selected in the 18th round of the 2017 draft.
Whitlock will be added to the Red Sox' 40-man roster.
