Leaders in one Upstate city have agreed to move forward with a development deal associated with the building of a new baseball stadium. The Spartanburg City Council has agreed to what they say, is the largest economic development in the city's history.
The new 3,500 seat baseball stadium will be owned by the city and is set to serve as the home of a minor league affiliate of the Texas Rangers. More than 300 million dollars in private investment is set for the development around the new stadium.
That plan calls for a 200,000 square foot office building, more than 350 apartments, a hotel and parking garages to be built around the new ballpark downtown. The city says it also will invest in the development and will allocate funding coming primarily from the hospitality tax.
The new Spartanburg stadium is expected to open in the spring of 2025.
