Tennessee is headed to the Autzone Liberty Bowl. The Vols (3-7) will play West Virginia (5-4) on Dec. 31 (3pm CST) in Memphis.
This is Tennessee’s second straight season with a bowl bid. Tennessee has lost seven of its last eight games.
There is no minimum win requirement to earn a bowl bid this season, and the SEC needed teams with losing records to play in bowl games to fill all of its allotted slots.
Tennessee’s coaching staff typically would earn bowl bonuses, as outlined in their contracts, but the staff waived such bonuses this season.
The Vols are 3-0 all-time in the Liberty Bowl, with victories over Arkansas in 1971 and Maryland in 1974. Tennessee has not played in the Liberty Bowl since beating Minnesota 21-14 on Dec. 29, 1986.
