J.J. Watt on toll of Texans' losing season: ‘It’s a compounding effect, nowhere near expectation’

HOUSTON (SportsRadio 610) -- J.J. Watt speaks often about reconnecting with the Texans' fanbase and living up to the expectation of competing for a Super Bowl.

Obviously, at 4-9, the Texans have not done that this season.

To add, the head coach-general manager was fired after Week 4. Two key starters were suspended for the remainder of the season for violating the league's performance enhancing policy. And like most NFL teams, attrition has also been a factor, as the Texans lose players to injury that make it even harder for an already struggling team to compete.

Off the field, the person left in charge since Bill O'Brien's dismissal, interim general manager Jack Easterby, is being scrutinized for his qualifications to be in the role. There is also much debate about what his role will be going forward, with a new general manager and head coach coming next season.

Texans CEO Cal McNair has expressed a desire for Easterby to return to his position as director of football operations. An article last week by Sports Illustrated painted Easterby as somewhat conniving and untrustworthy.

When I asked Watt about the toll the season has taken on him, this is what he said:

"Every week it's something," Watt said. "That's kind of what it's been, whether it's articles or it's suspensions, or it's whatever it may be. I mean, every week it seems like it's been something. You just want to play football and you want to be winning. And it's a lot easier to deal with things like that when you're winning. So, when you add losing to the equation and then you're dealing with coaching searches and all of this other stuff as well, it's obviously just a compounding effect.

"This season hasn't gone how we had hoped it would. It hasn't gone how I hoped it would. Like I've said all year long, this should be nowhere near the expectation, obviously. I don't believe it is. But yeah, it certainly hasn't been enjoyable. That's for certain."
