Did Hyundai Build a Better Prius?
Maybe they did. You decide.
In the gas / electric hybrid, Hyundai’s IONIQ can claim to get a bit better mileage and have a scootch more room in the back seat…and, of course, the IONIQ has Hyundai’s now-legendary 10-year / 100,000 mile limited warranty. Plus Hyundai offers a 100,000 mile warranty on the hybrid’s battery, too.
Both vehicles are handy four-doors with a rear hatch…and depending upon the level of trim, the IONIQ just might save you a few bucks, too.
In the IONIQ’s most efficient form, the EPA estimates that you’ll get mid-50’s MPG in the city and almost 60 on the road. Those are the highest numbers of any gas / hybrid sold in America right now.
And if you need more than that, the IONIQ now comes as a plug-in hybrid as well as an all-electric
Pricing on Hyundai’s IONIQ is quite attractive, with window-stickers starting in the low $20’s and staying in the low $30’s even in our top of the line Limited edition.
And that Limited packs quite a bit of content into it’s modest price. You’ll have heated leather, 17” alloys, sunroof, power memory seating with lumbar, LED ambient interior lighting, Harman Kardon audio, wireless charging with Apple and Android connectivity, a 10.25” screen, driver-attention-warning, auto high-beams, front and rear parking sensors, and all of the other blind-spot and cross-traffic assists that you’d expect.
Again, all that, plus hatchback functionality, legitimate room for five, 55+ MPGs, plus Hyundai’s big warranty are all yours for a price in the low $30’s.
So in the IONIQ vs Prius battle, Hyundai just may have the edge for 2020, but both companies will have new models out for ’21.
Game on!
