Yep…Infiniti's QX55 is a new addition to their family…but we can't really call it their new "baby".
Instead, the QX55 is a mid-sized five-door Crossover Coupe with a hatch in the rear. That's proving to be a popular body style these days. You get five-door utility with a bit more athletic body that a traditional "wagon-like" SUV offers.
So what does the QX55 offer beyond a bit of "swagger"?
Quite an array of tech.
But first let's answer some of those usual questions like "How much"?
The QX55 starts in the mid-to high $40's…and no matter which level of trim you choose, you'll get a 268 HP turbo four, a continuously-variable automatic, 20" dark alloys, a sunroof and intelligent all-wheel-drive. The EPA rates this ride at 22 city and 28 MPH on the road. We seemed to average 25 – 26 with our usual commute.
Add another five thousand and pick up leather seating, around-view monitors, nav with 3-D graphics, and Bose audio.
Then another 5K or so puts you in the same league with most genuine luxury / sport vehicles. You'll have heated semi-aniline leather, maple interior trim, heads-up display, acoustic glass, sliding and folding rear seats, predictive forward collision warning, front and rear automatic braking, LED lighting, a 16-speaker Bose system, a motion-activated rear liftgate, direct adaptive steering and Infiniti's "Pro Pilot Assist".
And these features take us to that "tech" that I was referring to earlier.
Infiniti's direct adaptive steering makes 1000 calculations per second…all designed to deliver maximum driving feel. Their intelligent AWD is similar…constantly changing to deliver power to exactly which wheels need it the most.
And their Pro Pilot Assist gives you intelligent cruise with distance control, auto-leveling LED lighting, and blind spot / lane departure intervention. It's not just an alert, but a system to nudge you back into position if you nod off and start to wander.
For less than 50 thousand, the entry-level QX55 delivers some serious technology, utility, performance, and a whole new athletic look.
And for the high $50's - $60,000, Infiniti's loaded QX55 "Sensory" model offers not only most everything that other luxury / sport vehicles offer…but then tops it off with some technology that many others just don't have the ability to offer.
