Experts from the the University of Minnesota are giving their tips for forming healthy habits and making lifestyle changes in the new year.
Yoga and mental health therapist Dr. Katie Schuver is a health lecturer at the University of Minnesota and she believes mindful movement could be the key to a healthier routine in the new year.
"Something like exercising more can become, I'm going to exercise 20 minutes every day or three times a week," says Schuver. "So having that very specific goal but also having a plan for that, can also help make it more realistic and achievable."
Schuver says that a commitment to promoting mental and emotional health through the year can be very helpful in staying on track.
Over half of the Americans pick some sort of New Year’s resolution with many choosing one related to losing weight. The trick is actually staying with it.
Schuver says committing to mindful movement practices may be easier resolution to stick to.
"Reducing sedentary behavior versus just getting exercise," she explains. "Ideally, both of those things can happen but sometimes approaching it with the idea of reducing sedentary behavior can be a more, maybe realistic, achievable way to look at incorporating more movement into life."
Schuver says above all, persistence and flexibility are the most important tools to help stick to your goals in 2025.
