Orchard Park, N.Y. (WGR 550) - As part of a flurry of moves made on Wednesday to create some additional salary cap space before the new league year on March 13, the Buffalo Bills have announced the release of center Mitch Morse and wide receiver Deonte Harty.
Morse started 126 games for the Bills over his five years with the team after signing as a free agent in 2019 from the Kansas City Chiefs. He had been under center for Buffalo in five of Josh Allen's six seasons to date.
The 31-year-old was named to his first and only Pro Bowl in the 2022 season.
While injuries have been a bit of a concern with Morse throughout his tenure with the Bills, his 2023 season was, arguably, his healthiest year, playing in 97% of the offensive snaps and not missing any game during the regular season and the playoffs.
Morse's release frees up $8.5 million of cap space for the Bills this upcoming season.
With Morse's departure from the Bills, WGR Bills beat reporter Sal Capaccio says the plans are expected to be Connor McGovern becoming the team's new starting center with David Edwards likely starting at left guard in 2024.
Edwards received a new two-year contract from the Bills on Wednesday.
As for Harty, he's released by the Bills after just one season in Buffalo. The 26-year-old signed as a free agent last offseason to provide a speed element to the Bills' offense, while also serving as the team's primary punt returner.
In his 16 games with the Bills in 2023, Harty caught just 15 passes for 150 yards and one touchdown.
He also returned 26 punts, averaging 12.4 yards per-return, and ran back a key 96-yard punt return touchdown in Buffalo's Week 18 win over the Miami Dolphins to capture a fourth-straight AFC East title.
Harty's release frees up $4.2 million for the Bills' salary cap, as they look to get under the cap ceiling ahead of the new league year on March 13.
