It seems new New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll could be reunited with, at least, one notable player from his tenure with the Buffalo Bills.
According to a report by Tony Pauline of Pro Football Network, the Giants are "very likely" to pursue former Bills and Chicago Bears quarterback Mitchell Trubisky.
The former No. 2 overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft is a free agent after spending last season as backup to Bills' star Josh Allen. The Steelers were also expected to be in the mix for Trubisky's services, Pauline previously reported.
The Giants have turned over a new leaf this offseason, bringing in Daboll and former Bills assistant general manager Joe Schoen following the exits of Dave Gettleman and Joe Judge.
Now 27, Trubisky remains a somewhat polarizing commodity after a disappointing stint as starting quarterback of the Bears.
But there's a sense among some pundits and fans that he wasn't exactly set up to succeed in Chicago under the guidance of general manager Ryan Pace and head coach Matt Nagy, who have both been dismissed from their posts since Trubisky was allowed to walk in free agency last offseason.
At least a couple of the former University of North Carolina Tar Heels star's former teammates in Buffalo have hyped him up this offseason, including Allen and star safety Jordan Poyer.
Asked last month whether he could envision Trubisky starting again in the NFL, Poyer said he was “One thousand percent" certain.
“One of the best teammates I’ve ever had," he added.
Allen was even more enthusiastic.
“The dude is an athlete. I don’t think people really understand that,” said Allen in praise of Trubisky’s dual-threat skill set. “He’s going to kill it.”
Trubisky, for his part, said he had regained his confidence in Buffalo, after feeling constrained by a conservative mindset in the Windy City.
Of course, it's unclear whether the Giants, or any other team for that matter, view Trubisky as a starter, but he could conceivably have a path to playing time back under Daboll, his former offensive coordinator in Buffalo. According to Pauline, Trubisky would be brought in to compete with incumbent starter Daniel Jones.
Like Trubisky, Jones has shown flashes so far in his career, but the overall results haven't been there, and he's now on his third head coach in four seasons since being drafted sixth overall in the 2019 NFL Draft.
