Ginny Morgan said her daughter, Brittany, woke her up after she smelled smoke and they realized they were trapped. They waited on a balcony until firefighters arrived to help.

"Just having to crawl over my balcony and climb down a ladder was just -- I just, there's no words to explain that. I never thought I'd have to crawl off my balcony," Morgan told WWJ's Mike Campbell.

Beth Ann Burt, a senior citizen who uses a cane, said her escape was frightening.

"I was sound asleep when I heard all the ruckus and I jumped up to see what was going on and I opened up the apartment door and I seen all the smoke and I just hurried out," she said.

Everyone made it out of the building safely and no injuries were reported.

Authorities are now trying to determine what caused the fire. An investigation is ongoing.
