KINCHELOE, Mich. (WWJ/AP) - A 42-year-old man has been arrested after human remains were found at a home in Michigan's eastern Upper Peninsula.

Sean James McInnis was arraigned in Chippewa County's 91st District Court Thursday on the following charges: torture, assaulting a pregnant woman causing stillbirth, first degree criminal sexual conduct, second degree criminal sexual conduct, first degree child abuse and assault with a dangerous weapon.

According to a release by the Chippewa County Sheriff's Office, following a "lengthy investigation," investigators discovered the remains while serving a search warrant Wednesday on Eric Place in Kincheloe, south of Sault Ste. Marie.

McInnis was arrested after the search, and the remains secured for analysis by the Medical Examiner's Office.

The sheriff's office said the search also uncovered unspecified "additional items of interest."

Detectives and deputies were assisted at the scene by a human remains analyst from the Michigan State Police and a doctor from the Northern Michigan University Anthropology Unit.

While few details have been released, WWTV-TV reports that the charges are related to incidents dating back to 2014 involving a woman, a minor child and another person.

McInnis is being held without bond in the Chippewa County Jail. Court records did not list the name of a defense attorney.

A probable cause conference has been scheduled for Sept. 19.
