DETROIT (WWJ) - The parents of a little girl who was found wandering alone on the streets of Detroit in the middle of the night have apparently come forward to police.
A good Samaritan called 911 around 10:30 p.m. Thursday after the child, dressed in a pink outfit that said "Girl Hero," was found walking by herself along the 15000 block of Appoline, near Fenkell and Meyers. No parent or guardian could be found.
The girl was taken back to the second precinct and police distributed her photo, asking for anyone who knew her to contact investigators.
WWJ's Mike Campbell was on the scene as the girl's parents walked into the police station just before 6:30 a.m. Friday. The father told police he was asleep and didn't realize his 2-year-old daughter was missing.
"A woman in bare feet and a man in slippers, for a lack of a better term, they went inside and immediately they started saying that their child had been missing," said Campbell. "Then they proceeded to have a discussion, a heated discussion, about whether a door was locked. I surmise that one parent lives here in Detroit, the other in Flint, and the child was here with the parent in Detroit last night with some young children friends and they were watching a movie. The child fell asleep and the dad put the child in bed fully clothed thinking, 'Why wake her up,' and somehow she got out, apparently."
Alicia Hodge, the girl's mother, said even though her daughter is only 2, she managed to unlock the door by herself and leave.
"We were asleep and my daughter, she somehow got out the house and wandered and some man found her and gave her to some woman and she ended up here. That's what happened," Hodge said. "I take care of my daughter, though."
The girl has since been taken by Child Protective Services to Children's Hospital for evaluation.
The incident remains under investigation.
