DETROIT (WWJ) - Roads are essentially being wiped off the map in southwest Detroit as construction begins on the new Gordie Howe International Bridge across the Detroit River.
In addition, the following temporary closures are taking place:
- The left lane of westbound Fisher Service Drive between Lansing Street and Campbell Street is closed now until May 3, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
- •The right lane of northbound Clark Avenue between Fort Street and Fisher Service Drive will be closed May 1 and May 2, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The Canadian-financed bridge will take over six years to build, officials said, and is expected to open at the end of 2024.
The bridge will connect Windsor, Ontario and Detroit, landing south of Historic Fort Wayne, in Southwest Detroit. It will be a third option for travel between the two cities, currently linked by the privately-owned Ambassador Bridge, and the Detroit-Winsor Tunnel.
