DETROIT (WWJ) - Charges could come as early as Wednesday for a 24-year-old man arrested in connection with a domestic incident turned triple shooting on Detroit's west side.
The man was taken into custody following an eight-hour manhunt after the shooting, which happened around 5 a.m. Tuesday at a home on MacKenzie Street, near Joy Road and Livernois.
The man is accused of shooting a 29-year-old woman, her 39-year-old boyfriend and her 8-year-old son in the head. All three remain hospitalized in critical condition. The woman's 3-year-old daughter was hit in the face with a blunt object and is also hospitalized. An 11-year-old boy was able to escape the attack unharmed.
Police say the suspect had a prior relationship with the woman involved, but did not elaborate.
The Detroit News identified the suspect as Daryl Edwards, the woman's ex-boyfriend. According to the newspaper report, Edwards had threatened the woman at least twice before and was arraigned in late April on charges related to those threats, but he posted both bonds -- 10 percent each of $2,500 and $25,000 -- went on the run and failed to show for a May 31 court hearing.
"The victim said he came to the same house unannounced, and threatened to assault her with a glass bottle," Police Chief James Craig told the paper. "He then allegedly drove around with the victim and threatened to kill her."
On another occasion, Edwards allegedly threatened the woman and one of her children with a knife.
"At the same location, the victim said she was awakened in her bed with the male suspect sitting on top of her holding a knife to her throat," Craig told the paper. "At some point, the suspect attempted to duct-tape the victim's mouth, but she screamed. He hit the victim in the face and fled."
According to the Michigan Department of Corrections, Edwards was sentenced to three years probation in December 2017 after pleading no contest to a charge of second-degree criminal sexual conduct.
"More could have been done early on to ensure that this violent predator was remanded into custody," Craig told the paper. "I'm deeply troubled. I believe had he been still in custody, the events ... could have been prevented."
