(WWJ) A 28-year-old man who police believe was drunk has been arrested for causing a crash that left a 6-year-old girl dead in Waterford.
WWJ's Mike Campbell reports that a mom, dad and daughter were picking up a new car at dealership on M-59 just east of Oakland County International airport when it happened, late Wednesday afternoon.
While the family was stopped at a red light at Highland Rd. (M-59) and Airport Rd., police say a Hyundai Sonata speeding at around 90 mph rear-ended the Chevy Equinox driven by the dad, with the daughter in the backseat, causing the Chevy to hit the Ford Fusion, driven by the mom.
The little girl was killed.
Both parents were hospitalized. The mother suffered only minor injuries, police said, while the father remains in critical condition.
A fourth vehicle in an adjacent lane was also damaged in the crash, but none of the occupants were hurt.
The speed limit in the area is 50 mph.
Just prior to the crash, police say the Hyundai was reported as a "reckless driver" -- spotted near Scott Lake Rd. and Pontiac Lake Rd. -- and officers were in the area attempting to locate the vehicle. Callers to 911 reported that it was the same vehicle was involved in the crash with the family.
The Hyundai driver, identified as a Waterford resident, was also taken to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Police said he is under arrest for his role in the crash and it appears that alcohol was a factor.
No names are being released at this time.
