DETROIT (WWJ) — A car fell into a sinkhole on Detroit’s southwest side.

Officials with Detroit’s Water & Sewerage Department tell WWJ that the large sinkhole; at the intersection of Lafayette Boulevard and Green Street, just north of I-75; is now under repair.

Deputy Director Sam Smalley said it started with a water main break on Thursday: “The leak had been moving soil and depositing it into a local sewer, and unfortunately that created a sinkhole or a void underneath the pavement. and a vehicle drove over it and partially fell into the hole.”

While Smalley expects the water main break to be repaired Thursday evening, he warned the sinkhole may take over a month to fix.

“We’ll have to backfill the hole, re-compact it for preparation of the concrete and asphalt,” Smalley said.

No injuries were reported, according to Smalley. The car was towed from the sinkhole.
