METRO DETROIT (WWJ) - Much needed rain is headed toward Southeast Michigan on Wednesday, but meteorologists said storms bringing gusty winds, possible hail and a big drop in temperatures are also expected.
AccuWeather Meteorologist Dean DeVore said residents in the Metro Detroit area should enjoy the pleasant weather while it lasts as rain is forecasted to become heavier with a storm or two as the day progresses.
"Off and on showers at least through the beginning phases of the day," DeVore told WWJ. "It's not particularly heavy, kind of just light, stinging showers, but they'll get heavier as we get into the afternoon. There could be a thunderstorm embedded in those showers and thunderstorms this afternoon, this evening."
DeVore said they cannot rule out the possibly of small hail and damaging wind with gusts potentially up to 40 mph.
Weather experts said there is some uncertainty in the forecast as far as where the storms will hit and how severe they will be, but a better picture will develop as the day goes on.
The severe weather is set to bring about an abrupt change to the warmer temperatures, DeVore explained.
"It's mild here this morning, low to mid 60s around the city and we're going to get temperatures within a few degrees of 70 or better. And then those showers and thunderstorms this evening and we'll end up brisk and much chiller over night as we clear back out down to a low in the upper 40s."
DeVore said Thursday will also be chilly with mostly cloudy skies and breezy winds 10 to 20 mph. A shower or two cannot be ruled out as highs reach around 60°.
Friday will be partly sunny, but breezy in the afternoon, DeVore said. Highs are only expected to reach 57°.
For the weekend, Saturday is forecasted to see intervals of clouds and sunshine with a shower or two possible. The high temperature will reach around 59°.
DeVore said the Metro Detroit area will see a passing morning shower on Sunday; otherwise, sun and some clouds with a high 56°.
