OAKLAND COUNTY (WWJ) - Over two dozen high school students with the Oakland Schools Technical Campus revealed their months-long construction of a 1,368 square-foot home that will soon be used as affordable housing in Pontiac.
The three bedroom, two bath home home was built by 26 high school seniors attending Oakland Schools Technical Campus-Northeast (OSTC-NE) in partnership with Oakland Schools, Oakland Livingston Human Service Agency's Venture, Inc., the Oakland County Treasurer's Office, Integrated Contracting, and Oakland County Neighborhood & Housing Development Division.
The students unveiled the home Wednesday morning, which instructor Aaron Swift told WWJ's Charlie Langton is "move-in ready."
"We got our lumber about the first week of October and we've got everything in there now that we can get in there," Swift said. "It has kitchen cabinets. There's a flooring installed, vanities in the bathroom -- it's really about as turn key as we can get."
Langton described the structure as "beautiful," and despite the months-long construction, the house has two more hurdles to overcome before its journey is fully completed.
"[It'll be] put on the back of a truck," Langton explained. "It's going about seven miles an hour through the streets about a quarter mile from the school in Pontiac."
Once the house reaches its permeant destination, it will become affordable housing for families in need in Pontiac where it will truly become a home.
"It's great," one of the students said with a smile when asked about the project. "It's very hard work."
