(WWJ) Drivers are being asked to weigh in on what they'd like to see done to a major intersection near Detroit Metro Airport.
The Michigan Department of Transportation wants to hear from the public about Ecorse Rd. and I-94... before some major changes are made.
The four options under consideration all include eliminating the left-hand entrance ramps to I-94, and adding full access to all directions to and from I-94 and Ecorse Road.
The options are:
- A diamond interchange with signals at the ramps;
- Adding a diamond interchange with roundabouts at the ramps;
- A partial cloverleaf interchange with two loop ramps; or
- A diverging diamond at the interchange.
Cross said the diamond is relatively new to Michigan, but they've put one in at University and I-75.
"It sounds like traffic goes into the opposite direction, but what it is is just a signaled intersection, and you just stay in your lane and follow your signal, but it eliminates left-hand turns," Cross told WWJ's Sandra McNeill. "Those are the most dangerous parts of an intersection because that's where you can have head-on crashes."
Cross said MDOT is also mulling putting in a pedestrian/bike path.
