(WWJ) — Many cell phone customers with Verizon service were having trouble making calls or sending text messages as the company dealt with widespread outages on Monday.
The website DownDetector, which tracks internet outages across the country, said problems with Verizon began popping up around 9 a.m. and persisted throughout most of the day.
Verizon officials around 7:30 p.m. said Verizon engineers had "fully restored today's network disruption that impacted some customers."
"Service has returned to normal levels. If you are still having issues, we recommend restarting your device. We know how much people rely on Verizon and apologize for any inconvenience. We appreciate your patience," the company said in a statement.
Some Verizon customers reported their phones had been stuck on SOS mode -- which only allows you to make emergency calls -- and others had been unable to make calls or send texts.
Local Verizon stores have seen an influx of customers coming in to find out what’s wrong. WWJ Newsradio 950's Tim Pamplin visited the Verizon store in Orion Township, where customers told him about their concerns.
“I use my phone constantly for work. So when I don’t have service, can’t call, can’t text, can’t put addresses in my maps to find where to go,” said Mike, a plumber from Oxford.
Verizon has not released any information as to what caused the problems.
