New Orleans Public School students will no longer be required to mask up in the classroom starting Monday, March 21.
The school system announced it is lifting the mask mandate for students K-12 because levels of COVID community spread have remained low.
“I am excited for our students and staff to be able to interact with each other in a more natural way and return to a sense of normalcy,” said Superintendent Dr. Henderson Lewis, Jr. “For anyone who feels more comfortable wearing a mask in school, we encourage them to continue to do so.”
This new guidance goes into effect more than two weeks after Mardi Gras and aligns with the expiration of the state’s COVID-19 emergency orders.
However, current COVID testing programs for students at schools will continue. Should families have questions, we encourage them to reach out to their individual schools for more information.
