HUNTLEY, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- There's been a big theft of very big pumpkins from a farm near Huntley.

Dave Reid owns Dave's Pumpkins on Algonquin Road west of Randall Road.

At least 500 pumpkins worth a total of about $5,000 dollars were stolen, according to Reid. They were the largest he grows, some weighing as much as 60 pounds.

"Most of the pumpkins that are missing are a variety called fat jack and they're my favorite pumpkin," he said. "It's a nice big orange pumpkin. It looks like a regular Jack-o-lantern except it's really really big."

Reid said he has no idea why the pumpkins were stolen, though police suspect whoever took them planned to sell them.

He said he always grows extra pumpkins, so he has plenty to sell despite the theft.
