Bears, school districts far apart on value of old racetrack site

(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Attorneys for the Chicago Bears and three northwest suburban school districts have very different ideas about the taxable value of the former Arlington International Racecourse.

A lawyer for the football team has asked the Cook County Board of Review to assess the value the 326-acre site at about $60 million, The Daily Herald reports.

But high school districts 211 and 214, as well as Elementary School District 15, say that number should be about $160 million.

At issue in all of this is how much the Bears should pay in property taxes for the site.

Tom Hayes, mayor of Arlington Heights, said he remains optimistic that the local site will be the best option for a new Bears stadium. Other suburbs and the city of Chicago are also making their case to the Bears, whose lease expires at Soldier Field in another decade.
