“The original run was 1200 that was back in 2004,” Executive Director Phil Cline said. “You can see it's really come a long way and everybody here wants to show their support for the fallen heroes and their families and that's what it's all about
Along the route, there are 600 photographs of officers killed in the line of duty.
When the event got underway, a police helicopter flew low over the starting line at the Gold Star Families Memorial & Park Just east of Soldier Field.
The run is taking place just days after a fallen Chicago Police Officer Luis Huesca was laid to rest after he was shot while on his way home following his shift.
“I don't know if I would tie it completely to the turnout. I guarantee you that there's huge support out here right now for the Huesca family,” Police Supt. Larry Snelling said.
Cline said the event would raise more than $400,000. It will be used to support the families of officers who were killed or catastrophically injured in the line of duty.
