(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A North Side woman is publicly thanking a man she doesn't know for an act of kindness she'll never forget.

“Like 5'8", light brown hair, glasses, thin, who had two little kids.”

Lynn Shockey is describing the stranger in line behind her at the Mariano's in Jefferson Park on New Year's Day morning – who stepped in to pay the balance of her grocery bill, when her health benefits card didn't work.

“I was putting things back and the gentleman said no, don't put it back, I'll pay for it. I said no you don 't have to do that he handed his charge card to the cashier.

It was only about $38, but Shockey who is a disabled senior on a fixed income, couldn't believe it.

“It made my heart feel so much better.

A post Shockey shared on the Nextdoor app publicly thanking the stranger has garnered hundreds of positive reactions and dozens of comments.

"God bless me and God bless him."

We asked her what she would like to say to him, if she had the chance.

“Thank you from the bottom of my heart. You made my whole year this year.”

Shockey says to pay the kindness forward, she made soup for others in her senior housing building.
