(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Over the last several years, Wrigley Field has played host to the Chicago Blackhawks and football teams from Illinois and Northwestern.
Now, the city’s professional women’s soccer team is joining that lineup.
The Red Stars will take on Bay FC at the Friendly Confines on June 8.
Chief Marketing Officer Kay Bradley said the announcement comes amid a groundswell around women’s sports and after the women’s NCAA basketball tournament set viewership records.
She said the Red Stars expect to bring some of that excitement to the night game.
Bradley says the team will be playing at SeatGeek Stadium in Bridgeview for a few more years but is looking to make it easier for fans to see them. The team wants to be part of any discussions about new stadiums built with taxpayer dollars, she said.
Tickets for the Wrigley game go on sale to the public Wednesday, April 17.
The Red Stars have on their roster players from five different national teams, players from Naperville and Orland Park and one who is probably pretty familiar with Wrigley: forward Mallory Swanson, who is married to Cubs shortstop Dansby Swanson.
