Cook County Treasurer urging residents to pay overdue property tax bills

COOK COUNTY, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas is urging property owners to pay their overdue 2021 property tax bills before her office's Annual Tax Sale next week.

The unpaid tax bills--totaling more than $211 million will be on sale from Jan 9-12.

According to the treasurer's office, less than $1,000 is owed on close to 21,000 properties and more than $1,000 is owed on more than 26,000 other properties.

During the tax sale, investors can buy the debt, but not the actual properties.
Payments for the 2021 tax bills were due in 2022.

The Treasurer’s Office mailed notices alerting property owners their unpaid taxes are to be offered for sale, which would put a lien against their properties. It is the first step in a process that can end with a property owner losing their home, business or land.

Payments can be made online at cookcountytreasurer.com, by mail, in person at any Chase Bank location in Illinois or at the Treasurer’s Office.
