CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) recently reported seeing the highest number of riders since 2020.

The CTA announced that on May 8, the agency set a post-pandemic record for highest daily riders.

Over 1 million people rode the CTA that day, and the week before, the CTA provided more than 6 million train and bus rides — the highest of 2024 and a 13% increase from the same time in 2023.

In a press release, CTA President Dorval Carter Jr. said the agency has been able to increase bus and rail service due to what he described as “unprecedented hiring efforts.”

“As we look toward meeting the increasing ridership demands, we will continue to add more scheduled trips as new operators complete their training and begin serving Chicagoland,” Carter said.

The positive news came amid growing calls for CTA President Dorval Carter to resign. Gov. J.B. Pritzker and over a dozen alderpersons were among those calling for a change of leadership at the transit agency.
